Gary McCracken, professor in the UT Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, will present “Bats Aloft” Friday, November 15.
Flight, the energetically most expensive mode of animal locomotion, evolved independently in at least three different groups of vertebrates. Of the living flying vertebrates, flight in birds has received much more attention than flight in bats, and birds are widely held to fly faster and more efficiently than bats. In his presentation, Professor McCracken will discuss differences and nuances in the evolution of vertebrate flight and recent research that challenges these generalizations.
The UT Science Forum takes place Friday, Nov. 15 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Thompson-Boling Arena Cafe (located at 1600 Phillip Fulmer Way), Room A.
Guests are encouraged to bring their lunch or purchase it from the arena. Each presentation is followed by a Q&A. The event is free and open to the public.
