Critical Race Theory: What it is and how it’s applied to research

feature imageMichelle Christian, associate professor in the UT Department of Sociology, will present “Critical Race Theory: What it is and how it’s applied to research” Friday, Sept. 10 at noon via Zoom.

In her presentation, Professor Christian will outline the history, theoretical advancements, and research application of Critical Race Theory (CRT). As a framework to understand and interpret racism, CRT has been generating academic scholarship since the 1980s, but the ideas that CRT posit have a longer genealogy. Specific theoretical components such as the salience of race, the contemporary application of colorblind principles that hide the perpetuation of racism, and the importance of scholar-activism will be explored. Christian will provide examples of how CRT has travelled to other disciplines and influenced scholarship and empirical research in the social sciences and applied fields.

The lecture is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
